Does SEP protect against ransomware?

Hello, I have SEP 12.x deployed through SEPM (what happened to version 13 by the way?!)

I wanted to know if version 12 include protection against ransomware?  I know there's software out there which tracks how many file are ammended over a period of time with a view to protecting against Ransomware.  Does version 12 have this, and if not, does version 14 have it?
